Days 28 & 29: Laundry Sundays

Sunday is our laundry day and we were out of detergent. We make our own and had two of the three ingredients, so Brian went to get the third from the store, along with Silk, bananas and apple juice. Rather than write the recipe, I'll give you a photo of ingredients because I'm a visual shopper and love knowing what packages look like. You grate the whole bar of soap and add a cup of each of the powders. You don't have to grate the soap very fine, as you can see in the close-up photo. 

One batch fits in a canning jar. We usually make a double batch so it doesn't feel like we're making it every time we turn around. If you've used baby formula recently, you'll recognize our scoop! Two of these do a large load of laundry.

Part of our Sunday laundry tradition is watching a movie (after the kids are in bed) while I fold and Brian irons. There's quite a pile and making the job fun keeps us from putting it off. As long as the movie is not too suspenseful. There's been a night or two when the credits roll and I'm frozen, still holding the first washrag. Such a let-down. Another reason we fun-ify Sunday night is that conversation tends to degenerate into how hard the coming week will be. It's better to compare schedules and then be happily distracted. In Kate and Leopold, Meg Ryan said, "Sunday is poisoned by Monday." If we can enjoy it to the very end, I feel like we've squeezed the last drop of fun out of it and we have clean clothes we can locate, even if they aren't put away til Thursday. 

This month, we've substituted online shows we need to catch up on, but tonight we have a movie from the library. It's not a documentary or school appropriate movie either, although that may guarantee I get things folded. The library started having a couple recent movies like The Debt and Iron Lady. So we picked one up for free!
